Written with the deepest empathy for women trapped by an almost absolute lack of resources - financial, intellectual, emotional - these stories by Ashokamitran have all the identifiable characteristics of his writing - irony, interiority, sensitivity.

The narrative in all three novellas - Sand, Malati, Those Two - moves in a series of short scenes, building tension with a relentless layering of detail. The exploitation of the women (Sarojini, her mother, Malati, Dhanam, Vaala), and their daily struggle against it lies exposed in all its terrifying ordinariness.

N KALYAN RAMAN, a senior telecom professional, took up translation in the mid-90s. His translation of short stories has been included in several collections of Indian language fiction in translation, including Southern Harvest and Katha prize stories, published by Katha. He has also translated a collection of Ashokamitran's short stories, The Colors of Evil,

GOMATHI NARAYANAN has taught in Kerala and New Delhi. Her translations from Tamil literary materials have appeared in Indian Literature and other periodicals. She has translated Ashokamitran's Padinettavadu Atchakodu (The Eighteenth Parallel). She has also translated, with Lakshmi Holmstrom, Sundara Ramawamy's Waves.
