Description

This book presents an insightful look into the success stories of leading business personalities, their philosophy towards business, their values, their efforts and hardships, their ingenious ways of overcoming the obstacles and constraints and their individual outlook towards life itself.

It is indeed fascinating that despite the excessive governmental controls and the generally constraining economic environment in this country, particularly prior to the ‘liberalization’ of 1991, there have been some phenomenal success-stories of Indian businesspersons. Seven such successful Indian businesspersons are profiled in this book. The success-stories are from different areas like information Technology, Biotechnology, Petrochemicals, Housing Finance, Automotive products and Dairying.

Most of these businesses were started almost from scratch. Many of them are the ‘new’ variety such as biotechnology, information technology and financial services. Each of these profiled business leaders have done something very different from the general milieu and have achieved results that have been out of the ordinary. When nobody cared about biotechnology and knew far less, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw started a bio-tech venture and made an exemplary success of the same. When It was a fledgling field, Narayana Murthy and Azim Premji nurtured this new technology in India and have proved that Indians can succeed in the global arena and that too in a knowledge business. Venu Srinivasan may not have started from scratch but in a country where quality consciousness was said to be woefully lacking, he brought the most coveted Deming Prize for quality. Deepak Parekh, joining the fledgling company his uncle had started, spread the housing finance services to touch the lives of several million Indian middle-class families. Mukesh Ambani, working shoulder to shoulder with his legendary businessman father Dhirubhai Ambani, emphasized the concept of processing/manufacturing on a scale that is truly world class. Verghese Kurien showed that a cooperative venture can be as successful as any venture in the entire world.

How did they achieve such phenomenal results? What is the secret, if any, of their success? What is the mental make-up of these extraordinary persons? How and what do they think? How are they so different? Or, are they different? What lessons can a budding entrepreneur or any businessman learn from them? What can a practicing manager and student learn?

What better way to get this information that speaking to them on a one-to-one basis? The author personally interviewed these extraordinary business personalities. The Personalities are profiled and the questions-and-answers are presented in the individual chapters in this book.

The idea behind the writing of this book has been to present an insightful look into these success stories—their philosophy towards business, their values, their efforts and hardships, their ingenious ways of overcoming the obstacles and constraints and their individual outlook towards life itself. This is a fascinating book where the highly successful businesspersons of our Bharat, so to say ‘speak’ to us and inspire us to make our country an economic powerhouse in this new century.
