Originally written in Bengali in 1912, 'The Post Office', rich in symbolism and allegory, is a play about man's (represented by a boy) passionate cry for the faraway, for the call of the awakening in the world of spiritual freedom. The only thing that accompanies him in his awakening is the flower of love. In appearance, says Anita Desai, the play is as modest as a dew drop; in effect it is as profound as the ocean.
Mahatma Gandhi was enraptured to witness the play in Calcutta in 1917; W.B. Yeats thought it a masterpiece. In 1940, the evening before Paris fell to the Nazis, Andre Gide's French translation was read over the radio. Mixing simplicity with sophistication, its un-analyzable, unfailing appeal has made it a world classic.
