Description

As a translation, this book is a combination of two texts: the source text of the Kathakali play composed by Unnayi Varier in the early eighteenth century and the performance manual based on the text written by Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair, the great maestro who dominated the Kathakali stage for more than five decades.

The play Nalacaritam belongs to the repertoire of Kathakali, the classical dance-drama of Kerala. The word 'Kathakali' (lit. story-dance) means the enactment of a story. Kathakali adapts episodes from the puranas and other well-known legends of India.

Nalacaritam of Unnayi Varier is generally considered as the most evolved of all plays used in the Kathakali repertoire. Its wide range of literary and theatrical potential is fascinating by the inexhaustible range of emotions it allows to be drawn upon.
