Description

This book relates to the Gorkha dynasty, the dynasty of the Malla Raja and the kings of Patan. It is a complete book of the people of Nepal, their occupations and pursuits of life -social, religious, economics, political and cultural.

The History of Nepal was translated from an original Parbatiya manuscript in the possession of E B Cowell by Shew Shanker Singh, the Mir Munshi attached to the British Residency. The history covers the period from the earliest times to the commencement of the Saka 1751 (AD 1829).

A description of the country and its people, with a full account of the invasion of the Gorkhas is found in this book. Here the royal family claims to be descended from that of Udaipur. The ladies of the higher classes like their muslin to sixty or eighty yards in length. Of course, they cannot walk much with such a bundle round them. It is a land of festivals. The Sambat and Saka years in Nepal begin on the 1st of Baisakh Badi, instead of the 1st of Chait Sudi as in Hinduism.
