Aruna Asaf Ali is always remembered for her daring act of hoisting the tricolor at Gowalia Tank Maidan, Mumbai on 9 August 1942. Besides the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding , she was posthumously honored with the Bharat Ratna, the nation's highest honor for her services to the nation.
