Description
This set of 2 volumes contains sacred laws of the Aryas as taught in the school of Apastamba, Gautama, Vasishta and Baudhayana. Volume 2 refers to the first two, and Volume 14 pertains to the later two. THE APASTAMBIYA Dharma Sutra forms part of an enormous Kalpa=sutra which digests the teachings of the Veda and of the ancient Rsis regarding the performance of sacrifices and the duties of the three upper varnas. It is primarily intended for the benefit of the Adhvaryu priests in whose families the study of Yajurveda is hereditary. The Guatma Dharma Sutra belongs to the Samaveda and is the oldest existing work on the sacred law. VASISTHA is the last remnant of the Sutras of a Vedic school which has perished, while Baudhayana is the work of a teacher of the Black Yajur-Deva, who composed manuals on all the various sub-divisions of the Kalpa, and founded a Sutra-Carana which is said to exist to the present day. THESE Sutras are the principal source of the metrical Smritis and presuppose the development of the prose literature of the Brahmanas, dealing chiefly with the duties of the Vedic student. These laws have been preserved, and have remained free from the influence of Sectarians.
