Description

This collection of witty, ironic, poignant and technically assured poems is representative of the best contemporary Indian poetry today.

It covers nine Indian women poets writing in English, representing two generations of post-Independence poets. Included here are Kamala Das, Mamta Kalia, Melaine Silgardo, Eunice de Souza, Imtiaz Dharkar, Smita Agarwal, Sujata Bhatt, Charmayne D'Souza and Tara Patel - poets who have extended the subject-matter and idiom of Indian poetry.

Despite their considerable achievements, Indian women poets writing in English have not received due recognition. Many deserving ones have failed to find publishers and the few of their poems which have been published are not easily available.

The tendency in preceding anthologies has usually be to include poets either for documentary purposes or with the intention of being comprehensive. This has often resulted in the inclusion of inferior work far from representative of the growing maturity evident in the themes and styles of the poetry of Indian women.

This anthology concentrates on nine significant contemporary poets writing in English, aiming to represent adequately the variety in each poet's work. The prime consideration is the intrinsic quality of the poems themselves- their subject, language and craftsmanship - rather than the renown or publishing status of the poets.

The book contains a general introduction which provides an overview of the work of Indian poets since 1000 BC and of relevant anthologies and other critical works. It also includes biographical notes as well as informative appraisals of the poets which attempt to provoke questions and provide possible areas of discussions: ancestors, the effect of ideologies, the pressures of multiculturalism, attitude to the craft of writing.
