This anthology provides a fine profile of Indian English poetry over a quarter of century.
It is distinct not only because of the care with which the selections have been made but also because if mirrors the range of concerns variety of styles and the unquestionable vitality of this particular literary growth.
Twenty prominent Indian poets in English are represented here:
Keki N Daruwalla
K R Srinivas Iyengar
K D Kartak
Shiv K Kumar
Arvind Krishna Mehrotra
A K Ramanujan
Their voices are individual and distinct. However, they share in common such concerns as reconciliation of the Indian identity with the English language in which they write. Alienation is a theme that recurs in a variety of ways; the overall message that appears to come through, however, is that the language of poetry whether indigenously Indian, or 'imported' English, does not make the writing any less Indian.
This anthology aims to underscore the living quality of the tradition in which these poets evolved and in which they now write.
The poems in this anthology are introduced and selected by distinguished scholar, critic and Malayalam poet Prof. K Ayyappa Paniker who was till recently Professor and Head of the Dept. of English, University of Kerala. He is the author of several works of criticism and creative writing and has received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award and the Sahitya Akademi Award for his poetry in Malayalam.
