Originally published in the early nineteenth century, W. Ward’s History, Literature and Mythology of the Hindoos is an extensive colonial-era account of Hindu religion, literature, philosophy, social customs and ritual practices.

This complete edition contains the original four volumes bound into two substantial hardcover books. Its subjects include Hindu philosophical ideas, sacred literature, deities and other objects of worship, temples and images, priests and ceremonies, rites associated with life and death, religious doctrines, ascetic traditions and major religious sects.

Ward wrote as a British missionary scholar, and some of his interpretations and terminology reflect the assumptions and judgments of that period. The work is therefore best approached as a historical primary source documenting early British scholarship and missionary perceptions of Hindu traditions rather than as a modern account of Hinduism.

Its breadth and historical context make this set useful for scholars and readers interested in colonial-era Indology, missionary scholarship, Hindu studies and the intellectual history of British India.
