Kalpana Chawla first flew in a light airplane over the plains of Haryana as a young girl in the early 1970s. She later flew higher, leaving Earth’s atmosphere for the first time as crew member on board space shuttle Columbia on Wednesday, 19 November 1997. Her second mission ended at the edge of space on 1 February 2003 when Columbia broke up during reentry.

From the moment of her selection to the NASA Astronaut Corps in December 1994, Kalpana become a hero to people of Indian descent around the world the world and a role model to school children who saw themselves reflected in her Story. Her Name has been given to a hill on Mars, A star in deep space, Colleges, Scholarship, and Awards.

This book presents events from the life of a very private women who become one of the most famous people in the world.
