This book forms par of an ongoing study of all aspects of developments in China, India’s great neighbour, its likely future political and social evolution, its economy and how its foreign and security policies affect India and the world. There are very through studies being undertaken in the United states and several countries in Europe and Asia.
There is also a certain amount of good work being done on china in some Indian universities, by scholars and former diplomats who have had direct personal experience of china: but all of it put together is far from enough. To be properly understood, this huge and powerful country, the cradle of an ancient and evolving civilization, demands a much more sustained and methodical study. We in India need to know china better.
ORF’s China Studies programme is an effort in that direction. This volume is a collection of analytical papers on the current internal political, social and cultural scene of china by Indian experts whom we brought together in seminar at ORF.
The proceedings of these more seminars, on china’s economy and foreign and security policies, and china’s policies towards India’s south Asian neighbours will also be published as a part of this series in the course of the next 21 months.
