The issue of statehood for Telangana is on top of many politically inclined minds in India and particularly in Andhra Pradesh. However, there is little available literature commensurate with the enthusiasm that the issue has generated among scholars, political observers and the lay person, not to mention the local population of the region.
The present volume is a modest attempt at bringing together diverse perspectives on the history and implications of the Telangana movement.
The selection of writings by national and international authors from different spheres of knowledge and activity throws light on complex, social, political, economic and emotional issues in the context of one of the most significant and longstanding sub-regional movements in the history of modern India.
The anthology comprises essays and research-backed write-ups on subjects like the Jai Telangana movement of 1969, the role of Elections in stoking this movement for separation, the advent of cine stars as political entities and the art scenario in Telangana, known for its vibrant colours and effervescent creative expression.
Two engrossing short stories at the end highlight the trials and tribulations of the region. Composed by two prominent personalities of Telangana, P V Narasimha Rao, former Prime Minister of India and Allam Rajayya, the doyen of Telugu short stories, ‘Golla Ramavva’ and ‘Bhoomi’ succinctly sum up the unchanging predicament of Telangana under successive apathetic political dispensations
