This is the third of the three-volume anthology of Modern Indian Literature written originally in the Indian languages and translated into English, that purports to present an authentic cross-section of Indian writing from 1850 to 1975.
The first in the series featured surveys and poems from 22 languages including English. The second volume was devoted to fiction. With the completion of this third volume devoted to plays and prose writing, the task of bringing together samples of the best of modern Indian writing is now complete.
The writers presented in this volume include Krishna Kanta Handiqui, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya, Rabindernath Tagore, Nirad Chaudhuri, Girish Karnad, Manoranjan Das, Balwant Gargi, Ghalib and others. The translations have been done by a competent team and sure to appeal to lovers to literature.
THE EDITOR:
Dr. K M George is an eminent writer and editor in English and Malayalam. He taught Malayalam literature at Madras Christian College and has been a Visiting Professor at Chicago University and Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla.
His works have received three literary awards. He is also a recipient of the Soviet Land Nehru Award, the Fellowship of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, and Padma Shri.
