This scholarly monograph examines the translation and reception of Sanskrit literature in Urdu. Shaik Abdul Ghani surveys Urdu renderings of works drawn from Vedic literature, the Puranas, Dharma Shastras, Indian epics, classical Sanskrit literature and the major systems of Indian philosophy.

The study discusses translations of texts and selections that include the Gayatri Mantra, the Arthashastra, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Bhagavad Gita, the plays of Kalidasa, Bhartrhari’s Shatakas, Patanjali’s Yoga Darshana and works associated with the Sankhya tradition. It also documents Urdu translations from Sanskrit fields including drama, poetry, prose, popular narrative, grammar, phonetics, medicine, law, astronomy and mathematics.
