The present volume under the title Buddha and Buddhism has been published on the occasion of a National Seminar on Pali and Buddhism organized by the Asiatic Society.

Buddhism now is a vast subject. For more than two centuries researches have been carried on Buddhism in its various aspects throughout the world. Thousands of books have been published in different languages and thousands and thousands of research papers have been published on Buddhism in so many journals of the world.

So, two days seminar will not be enough to cover the entire Buddhism. We have therefore, selected our topic for the seminar as pali and Buddhism, Just to give more emphasis on Pali Buddhism that is the earlier phase of Buddhism with special reference to Pali language and Literature.
