Description

1942-43 World War II – warplanes flying overhead – a remote little village in Bengal. Young Ganga and his wife Ananga are the only Brahmins, newly settled, in this village of low-caste peasants. Ganga is the Priest cum Doctor cum the only Teacher in the village. Ananga, childless still is a friendly woman. Life on the whole is pleasant. Soon black marketing begins and the war effects start taking its stall on the innocent villagers. What follows is a man-made famine in spite of a good harvest.

The peaceful village life changes for the worse and the villagers specially the women like Chhutki (who succumbs to the advances of the scare-face Jadu) and Ananga (almost raped by an unknown man) suffers the most.

At this point Moti the untouchable woman from Ananga’s village comes to beg for rice and dies on her doorstep. In this darkest hour, Ananga tells her husband of the advent of their first child.
