Description

Zamindar Bishwambhar Roy, though I self in an ocean of debt by his predecessors, is not ready to surrender to circumstances.

Bishwambhar Roy could not put up with the showing off by an upstart, and therefore curtly refuses to attend the house -warming ceremony held by Mahamga, the rich moneylender and business man’s son. Bishwambhar decides to celebrate the ‘homage day’ by pledging the last few jewels and ornaments. He sent for his wife (who had gone to his father’s house) and his son. But all the celebration ends with the tragic new of their death when their boat sank and the drowned.

Four years later Bishwambhar is left with a small piece of land, living a bland existence. However, as a last demonstration of power, he organizes a concert. Bishwambhar’s last dramatic gesture, before he has his horse, Toofan brought out and rides to his death, is to stop his guest, the newly rich Mohim, from offering a bag of coins to the dancer in appreciation of her skill, and offering his own last gold coins as a present to her, asserting for the final time the rights of the host.
