Description
Benaras, in the year 1920. Harihor with wife Sarbajaya and son Apu settles in the ground floor of a three-storied house. Sarbajaya keeps home, while Harihar works as a priest and a dabbler in medicine.
On the night of Diwali Harihar comes with a fever, which ultimately takes his life. As the film proceeds, Sarbojaya goes off to Manospota with son Apu, at her uncle’s place. Soon Apu shines at school, and eventually leaves for Calcutta for higher studies.
Sarbajaya gets seriously ill but Apu reaches home day after his mother’s death .Bhabataran, the old uncle advises Apu to give up his studies and take to the profession of a priest.
However, Apu realises as the film moves towards the end that the death of his mother has removed the only obstacle from the path of his ambition.
