Description
“The biggest hit of all time and a landmark movie…”
A retired police officer (Sanjeev Kumar) recruits two crooks (Amitabh and Dharmendra) to avenge wrongs committed by an evil dacoit, Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). A great ensemble cast, spectacular cinematography, super performances from each actor, powerful dialogues and music boost this superlative film. The roles are tailor made for the entire cast. It's the grand film ever made in the history of Indian Cinema. The movie is the most popular one and cannot be compared with any other, with respect to its runs in the theatres and the response to its repeat runs till today. It is the film of the Millennium. Gabbar Singh became a household name after this movie.
A breath taking revenge story of Thakur Baldevsingh (Sanjeev Kumar) who’s beloved ones are killed by dreaded robber Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). The disabled Thakur takes his revenge with the help of Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jaydev (Amitabh Bachchan), minor thieves.
The film has a lot of reasons to be a perfect one. The characterisation was to the point and does not loose its grip over the script. Every character has its own identity and a saga in itself. The links between the characters, which although are numerous, is not broken.
The Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar), is a die-hard police officer in his days and determinant of fighting till the end of last breath. Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) does seem to be the real one which fits for the saying, 'Pachas Pachas Kos Door Gaon Me Jab Koi Bachcha Rota Hai To Maa Kehati Hai, So Ja Bete; Varna Gabbar Aajayega'. His entry on the rocks in his empire thrills the audience. The film without Amitabh Bachchan is not even imagined; when he picks a gun, it never looked as if it would just go off. His anger was the real one. Dharmendra also balances the comic and action mixture and make us laugh a lot.
Rampur is a village, which is under control of dangerous bandit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). The Thakur Baldevsingh (Sanjeev Kumar) arrests him and puts him behind the bars. But Gabbar Singh runs away from jail in a very short period and takes revenge against Thakur by killing his whole family except his daughter-in-law Radha(Jaya Bhaduri). He also cuts off his hands. The Thakur wants to take the revenge but unable to do so, he brings the duo Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jaydev (Amitabh Bachchan) to the village. These two are also minor thieves but are honest to their work and takes any kind of risk for money.
The Thakur and the two build up the village and a force to fight Gabbar. Meanwhile Veeru, a flirt, finds Basanti (Hema Malini, a taangewali) and fall in love with her. Also Jaydev is attracted towards a silent widow Radha (Jaya Bhaduri), who has her husband & son of Thakur, killed by Gabbar. The villagers once make the Gabbar's men to flee with the help of Veeru & Jaydev. Gabbar Singh goes crazy over the incident and kills his returned men. Then clashes between Gabbar and these people start. In one incident, Gabbar takes away Basanti and Veeru with him. Jay runs to save Veeru & Basanti and succeeds giving away his own life. Veeru catches Gabbar and wants to kill him but Thakur reminds him of their pledge and takes over Gabbar, lastly police intervene and arrests Gabbar. The film also has several characters that make lot of impact with their unique style. Basanti (Hema Malini) is an outspoken buggy driver speaks without any break is lovable. The two shades, one of childish girl and other of a serious, silent widow, are portrayed by Radha (Jaya Bhadhuri) makes us think deep. Comic Jailer (Asrani) and Surma Bhopali (Jagdeep) are memorable with their accents and dialogues. Jaidev as the quite, brooding lover and Veeru as the loud flirt blend real well. The overall mix makes the characters as if they live today also. The film is special one for every movie lover. Many of the scenes also are events in themselves like Veeru's suicide scene, Gabbar's killing of Kalia (Viju Khote), Akbar (Sachin's) murder, Jay's proposal to Basanti's "mausi"(see picture below) and Jay's last fight and death (see picture below). The music by R.D.Burman was outstanding. And every song was that of different style creating its own impact. The fight scenes were directed with an unmatched excellence.
