Description

This is the English translation of Allama Syed Sulaiman’s lectures delivered under the auspices of Islamic Research Association of Bombay in 1931.

This is the first comprehensive work of this all-important subject, dealt with in any language. In his lengthy Introduction the learned author describes the scope and extent of the work, including the various complex terms used for navigation, navigators, sea-voyages, boats and ships, ports and coasts, adaptation of foreign words from Persian, Hindi, Chinese, Greed, Latin etc.

The subject proper, viz. navigation of the Arabs, is then dealt with under the headings: In the days of the Holy Prophet; during the reign of the Umayyads and Abbasids: navigable routes of the East: sea lore; literary investigations of Arab navigators; equipment and implements for navigation; ship building yards; the decline of Arab navigation; literature on navigation.
