Description

This book, analysing the doctrine of Prajnaparamita (Tib.Sher-p’hin pronounced as Sh’er-Ch’hin) or Transcendental Wisdom is based on Tibetan exegetical literature viz. Abhisamayalamkara of Maitreya or as runs its full title, the Abhisamayalamkara-nama-Prajnaparamita-updesa-sastra which is considered by the learned Tibetan tradition to be the most important as, i. a summary of the Prajnaparamita-sutras, and ii. as the text containing the special theory of the marga or the path to the attainment of Nirvana according to the Mahayanistic standpoint.

Maitreya according to Tibetan tradition was one among those present when the Sakya (Tib. Bchom-Idanhdas) delivered his discourses on Prajnaparamita, later on compiled by Kashyap (Tib. Hod. Srung), consisting of 21 volumes.

Obermiller has taken recourse to those Indian and Tibetan Commetntaries which are held in great esteem by the learned Tibetan tradition and are considered to contain the most clear, thorough and full analysis of the subjects contained in the Abhisamayalamkara.
