Description
Author's lecture on Hindu assessment of missionary work in India and discussion which followed forms the scaffolding of this book.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its establishment the Catholic Bishops Conference of India convened a meeting to review the work of the Church in India. It was an important gathering, and it was only second time in fifty years that such a comprehensive review was being undertaken.
The author was asked to give the Hindu perception of the work of Christian missionaries in India. The Bishops, senior clergy and scholars gathered at the meeting listened to him with unwavering attention. They told him clearly that they did not agree with much of what he said, and spelled out their reasons.
Secretary of the Conference later wrote: Your talk was scholarly as well as challenging. The fact that the audience wanted the discussion after you had spent nearly two hours with them shows the keen interest the audience had in the subject and your critique of the Christian mission.
