Jammu & Kashmir, 1949–1964 presents a carefully selected collection of 216 letters exchanged between Jawaharlal Nehru and Karan Singh during a formative period in the history of Jammu and Kashmir.

Karan Singh was only eighteen when he became regent of Jammu and Kashmir in 1949, two years after his father, Maharaja Hari Singh, signed the Instrument of Accession. Over the following years, Singh served successively as regent, Sadar-i-Riyasat and governor, with Nehru acting as both political mentor and trusted correspondent.

The letters provide a close view of Jammu and Kashmir’s integration into India, relations with Pakistan, the political challenges confronting the newly independent country and the Chinese conflict of 1962. They also reveal the personal regard and confidence shared by Nehru and Singh.

The volume includes biographical and explanatory notes by editor Jawaid Alam, as well as the complete memorandum submitted by Maharaja Hari Singh to President Rajendra Prasad in August 1952.
