Description
The Tabla is the main percussion instrument in North Indian Classical Music. Tabla the name is probably derived from the Arabic term tabla which means a drum. The Tabla has been an integral accompanying instrument for the two most popular vocal genres of Indian Classical Music, i e the Khayal & Thumri since the 18th Century. Though the tabla is an integral accompanying instrument, solo tabla performance have become popular in the recent years.
The tabla repertoire is extremely rich and besides the theka, the Tabla is capable of much more. This is precisely what the solo tabla players have proved over the years.
Apart from the popular taals like, Dadra Taal, Rupak Taal, Kaharwa, Chanchar, Thap Taal, Ektaal, Ada Chautaal, Thumra Taal and ofcourse the Teentaal, there are also many pre-composed tabla pieces used for solo performances.
One of the most prominent among the solo performers of the Tabla in this century is Padmashree, Padmabhushan, Pt Kishan Maharaj of the Banaras Gharana.
