Description

Maharashtra literally means Maha (Great) Rashtra (Nation). After the linquistic reorganization of the States of the Indian Union, the State of Maharashtra was formed on May 1, 1960 with the amalgamation of some parts of the former Bombay State and Central Provinces and Berar. The geographical limits of the traditional home of Marathi-speaking people are Goa and Daman on the western coast, the Wainganga river in the east and the Satpuras in the north.

Since ancient times Maharashtra has been the meeting-place of North and South, the Aryavarta and the Dravid land. Prehistoric finds in the Godavari valley and other areas indicate the antiquity of occupancy of this part of India. Maharashtrian society is an amalgam of several races-Nag, Kol, Mund, Dravid and Aryans.
