Description

Basheer brings an impetuous energy to the short story in Malayalam. This volume presents twelve unusual stories by Basheer.

The lands traversed by Basheer, the peaks he scaled, the abysmal depth he plunged to, cannot fail to amaze any reader. Even more astonishing is the manner in which he transformed all these experiences into the stories he tells us, turning the biographical into the historical, the transient into the perennial, and the trivial into the sublime.

Here is a man who told us story after story . . . Entranced, we listened, till the story teller grew into one big story himself . . . Time has put up a stop to the story that is Basheer. But the stories he told, treasured in our memory, know no end. - - M T Vasudevan Nair

AUTHOR: Born in 1908, in a small village Vaikom, Kerala, completed his study of Quran by the age of eight, and went to English School. Inspired by Gandhiji's nationalist movement, he participated in the salt satyagraha on the Calicut beaches, and was jailed.

More than five decades ago, Vaikom Mehammad Basheer altered the map of Malayalam fiction. Unknowingly. He, who was not quite sure of its alphabet, revolutionized the art of story telling in Malayalam.
