Description
It is a fact accepted the world over that, in its expanse and scope, the Indian rhythmic Traditions are second to none. Having realized the truth of this statements many times over, I felt the need to present Indian rhythm to audiences in a more accessible and entertaining format whereby as drummers we would outgrow performing for small discerning audiences and be able to reach out to the larger masses who only went for mainstream and popular music shows.
With Drumscape, I simply revamped the traditional Taal Vadya Kacheri into a slightly groovier format. We retained all the intricacies and complicated mathematics, but added dashes of colour to the presentations. I used my handsonic with its low bass tone to give a bass guitar-like effect. All the artists concentrated on groove and kept an eye on the fact that we never strayed too far away from it.
We highlighted the sawaal-jawab aspects, which make the show interactive. We invited the audience to participate at times. In short we simply brought to the fore ground certain aspects of classical drumming which always existed, but in lesser proportions. Drumscape is not my creation (it is, as I said an age-old format), but it is my territory. It is an example of my belief that with a little editing and packaging, our rhythm will hold audiences glued for hours (as is evident from the concert on this presentation).
Even today, when cable channels and Bollywood are bombarding audiences with a gratification-a-minute entertainment we classically trained musicians can blow away audiences who have never attended a single Indian Rhythmic Concert Before.
