Description
Based on an original novel by Rabindranath Tagore, Chokher Bali, a Passion Play, is set between 1902 and 1905. It tells the story of a beautiful, educated woman, Binodini, struggling to free herself from the oppression of widowhood. Widowed within a year of marriage, she moves into Mahendra’s house as a companion to his mother. There she meets Mahendra’s wife Ashalata and Behari, who is in and out of the house.
Mahendra and Behari were both offered her band in marriage and bad refused. Binodini sees the husband, the home and marital bliss that could have been hers and seduces. Mahendra through the innocent medium of Asha. Yet, Asha and Binodini become inseperable, so much so that they affectionately call each other Choker Bali, literally Sand in the Eye, Among these four develops a forbidden attraction, a mesmerizing web of destiny and desire.
