Kalidasa’s Rtusamharam is one of the earliest and most celebrated poetic descriptions of the seasons in classical Sanskrit literature.

This scholarly critical edition is based upon six printed texts and a fragmentary manuscript preserved in the Government Manuscripts Library at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune. It presents the Sanskrit text with the complete commentary of Manirama and the surviving fragmentary commentary of Amarakirtti Suri.

The editor generally follows Manirama’s detailed word-by-word interpretation while adopting alternative readings where required by meaning and context. Variant readings and references to parallel descriptions in the Ramayana and other works of classical Sanskrit literature are supplied throughout.

The introduction surveys the depiction of the seasons in Sanskrit literature from the Vedas through later classical writers. It also examines the relationship between Rtusamharam and comparable seasonal descriptions in the Ramayana.
