Description
First Proof: The Penguin Book of New Writing from India 1 is the first volume of what we hope will become an annual anthology of recent Indian writing in English, comprising short fiction, essays, reportage, travel pieces, memoirs and works in progress. There is no verse-a serious omission-but we tried. Hopefully, by next year we’ll know where beat to look for fine, unpublished poetry. This has turned out to be a sizeable volume, and there are still pieces that we had to leave out with great reluctance. The future looks good, through we are constantly, casually told otherwise.
Our attempt has been to put together a collection what will justify the New in the subtitle. As we see it, the true purpose of such an anthology is to showcase emerging talent and writers who have enjoyed acclaim but not as wide a readership as they clearly deserve. We decided, for this reason, not to approach authors who have published more than two books, or hose who have received exceptional notice with their debut works. You will, of course, find a few established authors here, like Andre Beteille, but what is included is their writing in a genre that is completely new to them.
