Description
Selected and Translated from the Bengali original by Amitava Ray, these stories, told in a very simple and lucid style, attained great heights with his sympathetic insight into the sufferings and anxieties of the characters and his faithful delineation of the social milieu.
Author's chief concern as an artist has been the changing values of the Bengali middle class intermittently tormented by famine, war and the refugee problem occasioned by the partition of Bengal. But there is not the faintest hint of moralizing nor any concession to sentimentality in his stories.
The eleven stories selected for translation here are fairly representative of Narendranath Mitra's oeuvre.
