Description

Providing the most thorough coverage available in one volume, this comprehensive, broad-based collection offers a wide variety of selection in four major genres of literature, and also includes a section on film. The five sections contain detailed critical introductions to each genre, brief biographies of the authors, and other clear concise editorial apparatus.

Updated and revised throughout, this edition contains additional essays, fiction, poems, and plays. With its innovative structure, comprehensive coverage, and insightful and stimulating presentation of all kinds of literature, this is an anthology students will turn to again and again.

For each of the four forms of literature, we have as before provided separate explanatory discussions, each approximately thirty pages in length. Our commitment to the understanding of literature has also moved us once again to include a special section on the contemporary art form - film-that is most closely related to the literary forms in this book. This section includes the complete shooting script of Citizen Kane, illustrated with a sequence of eleven shots from an opening scene of the film. Beyond our guides to understanding each of the forms, we have provided biographical headnotes for each author in the collection and a glossary of critical terms after the text of the book.
