Description

In recent years the term religious pluralism has come to be used not only in a descriptive sociological sense but also as theologically prescriptive. Within this new paradigm, traditional Christian understandings of Christ, conversion, evangelism, mission etc have been radically re-interpreted.

The Recovery of Mission explores the pluralist paradigm through the work of three of its most influential Asian exponents, subjecting each to a theological and philosophical critique. From biblical, partristic and contemporary theological writings, it argues for the uniqueness and decisiveness of what God has done for us in Jesus Christ.

The author seeks to show that many of the valid concerns of pluralist theologians can best be met by rediscovering and re-appropriating the missionary thrust at the heart of the gospel. The book ends with suggestions, challenging to pluralists and conservatives alike, as to how the gospel needs to be communicated in a multi-faith world.

REVIEWS

Ramachandra’s proposal is based on an enviable familiarity with theological discourse, an irrefutable logic and a deep sense of mission. For my students in Philadelphia and Buenos Aires, this is the kind of textbook I have been looking for.
-J Samuel Escobar, professor of Missiology, Easter Baptist theological Seminary President Emeritus, Latin American theological Fraternity.

It is refreshing to hear the critical and constructive voice of a Sri Lankan evangelical theologian assessing three major Asian theologians concerned with other religions: Stanley Sarmartha, Aloysius Pieris and Raimundo Panikkar, This book will be of interest to those in the West as well as to the Asian church out of which it comes.
-Gavin D’Costa, Senior Lecturer in Theology, University of Bristol

This is a fascinating, demanding, intricate and passionate book. It is on an important subject: the encounter of Christians with those of other faith communities and with modernity, It has a cosmopolitan perspective, being written by one at home in Asian and Western cultures, marrying together strenuous, contemporary thinking and a universal, evangelistic intents.
-Howard Peskett, Tutor in Mission and Religion, Trinity College, Bristol
