Description

This book introduces a selection of published twentieth century Nepali texts, in both prose and verse. It contains five short stories, two essays, an extract from an autobiography, and twenty complete poems, along with seven extracts from a longer narrative poem and provides an introduction into modern Nepali literature.

Each text is accompanied by notes which clarify the more difficult passages and, in the case of poetry, by literal English translations. There is also a comprehensive glossary with notes on the etymology of each world. An introduction provides the historical, literary and linguistic background to the texts, along with a summary of the orthography, grammar and lexicon of literary Nepali.

The book is intended for readers who have a basic grasp of Nepali grammar and vocabulary, and also for teachers and students of other South Asian languages who wish to gain an impression of Nepali literature in its original language.
