Sikh Art and Literature explores five centuries of Sikh artistic, literary and spiritual heritage through essays by scholars, historians, curators and collectors.

The art section examines early Sikh painting, illustrated Janam Sakhi traditions, the treasures of the Sikh kingdoms, European representations of the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Sikh sacred architecture and contemporary Sikh art. Many of the volume’s illustrations were reproduced here for the first time.

The literary studies explore the musical and mystical dimensions of the Guru Granth Sahib, the writings and translations of Max Arthur Macauliffe, the poetry of Bhai Vir Singh and Puran Singh, and the works of Bhai Mohan Singh Vaid and Khushwant Singh. Extracts from visitors’ accounts of the Sikh court and new translations of early twentieth-century poetry provide additional historical context.

Published in collaboration with the Sikh Foundation, this extensively illustrated volume offers an accessible yet scholarly introduction to the artistic and literary achievements of Sikh culture.
