Description
The patronage and encouragement to Indologists appears to be dwindling. When this was brought to the attention of the Prime Minister of India during his visit to Germany where he had detailed discussions with German Indologists, the idea of holding an international symposium emerged.
As thoughts on the symposium were brainstormed, the whole concept became more and more challenging and exciting. It was felt that an international symposium on India Studies would be particularly relevant, as it would attach importance not only to classical but also to contemporary India. It would act as a bridge between Indology and India Studies. The symposium would project different aspects and developments in modern India and help thereby in the projection and perception of a holistic image of this great, vibrant, dynamic and pluralistic democracy.
As a curtain-raiser to the symposium, it was decided to bring out a book with contributory articles from eminent scholars on different subjects on India like science and technology, human rights, international relations, philosophy, sociology, etc. The picture of India which emerged was that of a mosaic with colour as beautiful as those in a peaccock’s feather, where each colour exquisitely weaves itself like magic into the other. No individual colour can be separated or isolated. There is an inner harmony as the whole emerges greater than the sum total of its parts. India’s pluralistic culture is like the colours in a peacock’s feather. Each individual part is important and is intrinsically contained in the whole.
This book gives a glimpse of India. It is a journey towards unraveling a magical mystery.
