No complete lexicon of any language has ever been published, and this lexicon is no exception to the rule. Gujarati language is rich enough, and it is believed that there are no less than 75,000 and odd words in the language, including the words current in old Gujarati literature. This dictionary, with 51,595 words, contains etymology, idioms, proverbs, quotations, botanical and other technical terms.
The first Gujarati-English dictionary compiled by M B Belsare was first published in 1895, and a second edition appeared in 1904. Since then that dictionary has been out of print, and has led to this compilation.
The first Gujarati-into-Gujarati dictionary called "Narmakosha" compiled by Narmadashankar Lalshankar of Surat contained 25268 words. The first Gujarati-English dictionary of Belsare contained 35,135 words. The latest Gujarati-into-Gujarati dictionary contains 35,678 words. So, though the present dictionary is not fully complete, it has the unique honour of being the largest with 51,950 words.
A special feature of this dictionary is that it introduces several botanical terms with their scientific names and natural orders. Select words pertaining to Zoology, Physiology, Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, Medicine etc have also been included in this edition..
