Description

Broken Ties was Tagore's sixth novel, written after a gap of five years following Gora. He translated it from Chaturanga, jointly with W W Pearson. It is written in a completely different style than his earlier novels. It is terse, light and dramatic.

All the stories are told by Srivilas, a young man from a village, coming into the intellectual sophistication of Calcutta. He represents the alter-ego of Satish, the central character, who he hero-worships. Damini is the love interest who marries Srivilas although she loves Satish.

Between Satish and Damini there exists a suppressed but turbulent emotional current. Srivilas is aware of the same but is too fond of both of them to feel hurt.
