Description

An English translation of Bangla original "Raja', this play is an allegory of man's spiritual adventure.

The King of the Dark Chamber was first published in 1914. It was translated by Kshitish Chandra Sen and revised by Tagore. The play is an allegory of man's spiritual adventure. God is beauty and love. But is beauty merely a physical attribute? Can it be seen in outward manifestation?

The Kind is ugly and lives in a dark chamber. Sudarshana, his Queen, seeks him in beauty but she finds him only in suffering. Her King's banner has a thunderbolt within a lotus. It symbolizes the central meaning of the drama. The dark chamber stands for the 'dark night of the soul'.
