Description

With the formation of Uttaranchal State comprising of Kuamaon and Garhwal regions, in November 2000, there is renewed interest in this fascinating area of India. Sometimes remote and forbidding, but always beautiful, the Himalayas have been an area of perennial attraction to people from all over the world. The Kumaon area of Uttaranchal is one of the most attractive parts of the Western Himalayas.

This book is a welcome addition to Himalayan literature by the authors, who are well-qualified to write on this subject. The book has covered various aspects of Kumaon in a lucid and readable manner, and will appeal not only to the general reader, but also to administrators, tourists and others interested in Himalays in general and Kumaon in particular.

The book introduces the reader to one of the most attractive regions of the Himalayas. It gives a historical background of Kumaon from ancient times to the present day; the resume of various rulers and kingdoms is a selective history of this fascinating territory. It focuses on the ecological crisis confronting the hill areas.

Some of these issues are presented specifically with reference of the Kumaon hills, but much of the discussion has relevance to the rest of the Himalays as well. It also deals with the tourist attrractions of Kumaon. Apart from the well-known spots, it gives information on the trekking and cycling trips that can be a major attraction for the young tourists.
