Description

As part of a 21-Volume series, this book points out that world peace is not myth; it is a kind of mirage. We have never achieved it. And because we have never achieved peace, it is a real necessity that we look into all avenues of creating peace.

Many of the world’s problems and conflicts arise because we have lost sight of the basic humanity that binds us all together as a human family. We tend to forget that despite the diversity of race, religion, ideology and so forth, people are equal in their basic wish for happiness and peace.

The situation of today’s world is completely different from the past. In the past, human communities societies remained more or less independent of one another. The greater the diversity of religious traditions that are available, there greater their capacity to meet the needs of different people. In the history or humanity there have been very tragic events which came about because of religion. Even to this day, we see that conflicts arise in the name of religion and the human community is further divided.

In C-operation, working together, the key thing is the sense of responsibility. But this cannot be developed by force. Humanity needs more genuine co-operation. The foundation for the development of good relations with one another is altruism, compassion, and forgiveness, Altruism and forgiveness are the basis for bringing humanity together. Then no conflict, not matter how serious, will go beyond the bounds of what is truly human.

Buddhism paid attention to Karuna – Compassion- loving kindness to human beings, and maitri extending fellow feeling to all beings not only to friends but also to foes, not only to man but also to all living beings. It is the high level of understanding to prevail and co-operation and integrate people by closing down all the avenues of aversions.

As a social code Buddhism, lead us to peace, understanding and integration for the achievement of humankind. Buddhism tried to inculcate the sense of service and understanding with love and compassion by separating man from passions and elevating humanistic tendency in man with the help of morality, Karuna, and Samata. The peace and integration is the central theme of Buddhism. It is indispensable for world peace as a way in securing the integral growth and stability.

Today at the threshold of 21st century, the world is in dire need of peace. Peace, that is, spreading harmony, universal brotherhood, love compassion, forbearance, equanimity and breeding solace in interpersonal relationships, and then in international relationships. This is a strong need for adherence to human values. International humanitarianism, no-violence and world Peace are a foremost necessity of today.

Buddhism, in the changing world of today, has a great deal to contribute to establishing pace. We have dhamma; we have kalachakra; we have Lotus sutra; and we have non-violence. It provides for a revolutionary doctrine of peace by way of concept of commonwealth of dharma. Buddhism is a religion that teaches the path to enlightenment. It refers to the dharma or Truth, not to an external isms or doctrine.
