Description

Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism are the three main religions of China. The first two are of indigenous origin. Confucianism was dealt with in Volumes 3,16,27 & 28 of the Sacred Books of the East. These 2 volume cover Taoism. THE Doctrine of Tao, its history, its influence and its relation to the other two religions of China are fully treated in these two volumes. These texts inculcate a morality of high order and has developed a system of grotesque beliefs and preserves the breath of life. THESE two volumes carry The Tao Teh King - Or The Tao and its characteristics and XXXIII books titled The writings of Kwang-3Ze, and The Thai-Shang Tractate of 'Actions and their Retributions'. These works also contain four other shorter Treatises of Taoism; Analyses of several of the Books of Kwang-3Ze by Lin His-Kung; a list of the stories which form so important a part of those Books; two Essays by two of the greatest Scholars of China, written in AD 586 and AD 1078, illustrating the Taoist beliefs of that age. THE Treatise of Actions and their Retributions exhibits Taoism of the eleventh century in its moral or ethical aspects. It is seen more as a philosophical speculation than as a religion in the ordinary sense of that term. It was not till after the introduction of Buddhism into China in our first century that Taoism began to organize itself as a Religion, having its monasteries and nunneries, its images and rituals.
