Sacred Books of the East is the monumental 50-volume series of English translations edited by the distinguished scholar F. Max Müller. Originally published between 1879 and 1910, the series established an enduring foundation for the historical and comparative study of Asian religions.
Prepared by approximately twenty leading scholars and translators, the collection encompasses important texts from seven major religious traditions. Twenty-one volumes address the Vedic and Brahmanical traditions, ten cover Buddhism, two Jainism, eight the sacred literature of the Parsis, two Islam, and six the principal indigenous traditions of China. The fiftieth volume provides a comprehensive general index.
Included are translations of the Upanishads, Vedic hymns, the Bhagavad Gita, the Laws of Manu, the Satapatha Brahmana, Buddhist sutras and Vinaya texts, the Jaina Sutras, the Zend-Avesta, Pahlavi texts, the Qur’an, and major works of Confucianism and Taoism.
