Description

Kurinji is a socio-historical novel conceived in the background of the political history of Thanjuvoor in the early part of the nineteenth century. The author has put his knowledge of music to good use in the novel while introducing great musicians like Muthuswamy Deekshitar and Thyagaraja as characters.

The theme of the novel is the impact of Carnatic music on the common man. The author shows how it is possible to transcend the berriers of cast and creed with the help of music. This he does with the help of his protagonist Kurinji-a dalit girl, who scales the heights of art encouraged and guided by her master Muthuswamy Deekshitar.
