Sant Gyaneshwara manifested in the thirteenth century A.D. His forebears originally came from Apegaon hamlet situated on the northern bank of river Godavari, Some distance off Paithan. For some reason they migrated to Alandi village. They were Brahmins and by profession were the revenue officials of Patwari rank known by the surname Kulkarni.
