Description

BOOK ONE LIGHTS ON YOGA

This collection consists of illuminating extracts from Sri Aurobindo’s letters to disciples. These are extracts from letters written by Sri Aurobindo to his disciples in answers to their queries.

‘‘This Yoga implies not only the realisation of God, but an entire consecration and change of the inner and outer life till it is fit to manifest a divine consciousness and become part of a divine work. This means an inner discipline far more exacting and difficult than mere ethical and physical austerities. One must not enter on this path, far vaster and more arduous than most ways of Yoga, unless one is sure of the psychic call and of one’s readiness to go through to the end.’’

BOOK TWO MORE LIGHTS ON YOGA

These are mostly extracts from letters written by Sri Aurobindo to his disciples in answer to their queries Wherever possible the letters have been reproduced at length or even in full, in order to preserve their charm and spontaneity. Written over a period of many years (mostly during the 1930s), they have put together and arranged in section in the manner of Lights of Yoga so as to be of help to aspirants for the understanding and practice of yoga.

BOOK THREE BASES OF YOGA

In this collection of 156 extracts from letters to disciples, Sri Aurobindo explains the central principles and practices of his Integral Yoga.

‘‘There can be no firm foundation in sadhana without equality, samata. Whatever the unpleasantness of circumstances, however disagreeable the conduct of others, you must learn to receive them with a perfect calm and without any disturbing reaction. These things are the lest of equality. It is easy to be calm and equal when things go well and people and circumstances are pleasant; it is when they are the opposite that the Completeness of the calm, peace, equality can be tested, reinforced, made perfect.’’
