Description

From the preface of the book:
Representative Short Stories in English has two Purposes: First, to acquaint our Degree students with the elementary principles on which every good story is based; and, second, to provide a representative group of short stories in English for their enjoyment and appreciation. Since no collection of short narratives, however bulky, can fully represent a type, period, or country, no attempt has been made here to assemble a large group of short stories.

We believe that in learning to criticize and evaluate the short story the student should not cut his eye-teeth on stories that are to ‘modern’ or experimental. He should be provided with modern stories which can be fairly called representative – representative of the various types and subject matter that he is likely to meet in the usual course of his reading. Such stories, with useful notes at the end, are contained in this volume.
