Description

This selection consists of twenty-six representative poems of Nazrul and they are translated competently by Basudha Chakravarty.

This small volume is a modest attempt, through the medium of translation, to introduce one who is acknowledged to be one of the major workers in our national renaissance.

Born in 1899 Nazul Islam appeared on the literary firmament of Bengal at a time when the people of not only the province but of the whole country were historically conditioned to launch themselves on a voyage of self-discovery. The manner in which he used poesy to beckon his countrymen to complete self-awareness showed that the hour had found the man.

A born votary of truth and beauty, he called upon the people, both by rhyme and song, to rebel not only against political subjection but social injustice, inequality and oppression. Above all he wove the different patterns of our national culture into a humanist synthesis of many-sided splendor.

The current of resurgent life that he created, echoes and re-echoes with his vibrant poetry and resonant music long after disease, very prematurely, stilled his voice. It is, by common agreement, very important that the currents created by regional writers should flow and merge themselves into India's cultural mainstream.
