Description
The five hymns are the earliest poems of Sri Bhagavan, written about 1914. He was still living in Virupaksha Cave on the Hill and some of his followers used to go into the town of Tiruvannamalai daily to beg for food. One day they asked Sri Bhagavan to compose a song for them to sing as they went.
At the pressing request of devotees he composed a song with a refrain –“Arunachala” at the end of every stanza. It tells in glowing symbolism of the love an union between the human soul and God and it is among the most profound and moving poems in any language. Although he who wrote it was established in the bliss of indissoluble union, it was written for the sake of devotees and expressed the attitude of the soul that still aspires.
Navamatri Malai is a collection of verses composed by Sri Bhagavan on different occasions.
Arunachala Padikam and Ashtakam are the only poems that came to Sri Bhagavan spontaneously and compelled him, as it were, to write them without anyone urging him to do so.
Bhagavan wrote Arunachala Pancharatnam first in Sanskrit at the request of Kavya Kanta Ganapathi Muni and then in Tamil. It is a cryptic account of different paths to realization.
We do not have Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi’s voice on record. In the 30s, a south German publishing house by the name of wilhelm Otto Barth Verlag, managed and partly owned by a friend of ours, Mrs. Baronin Ursula von Mangoldt, sent a van with recording equipment to India to make recordings of important happenings all over India.
When they came to Sri Ramanasraman, they asked the management for permission to make a recording of the question and answer session with Sri Bhagavan, whose opinion was duly asked. In a very loving and gracious way, He seems to have declined, saying that “His Voice is silence and that, is the most effective one.”
But His teachings-most of them in verse form-and their recitation (saravana, manana and niddidhyasana), have a tremendous spiritual effect. Sri Bhagavan Himself encouraged the chanting and reciting of His works. The fifteen days of Tamil Parayana in Sri Bhagavan’s own handwriting has already been published by us in Sri Bhagavan’s own handwriting has already been published by us in 1987 with Sri Ramanasramam’s encouragement, and it was about the same time that the actual Tamil Parayana (recitation) was also re-started at Sri Bhagavan’s samadhi shrine, with the assistance of the late Sri Kunju Swamy.
COMMENTS
If a man were to do the greatest deed in the world and come and sit in the presence of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi he would realize that his deed was as nothing compared to the perpetual Deed of Self-realization of the Sage.
If a man were to write the greatest book in the world and come and lay it as an offering before the Sage he would realize that the Sage was a greater Book, which is written from day to day, not with the medium of pen and ink and paper, but without intermediation, and even without any conscious effort, in the inner being of all who care to come and read it.
